10) Where does the money go?
All items listed in our gift packages are used in Oxfam New Zealand’s work. The price of each gift package reflects the collective cost of providing these items. Each item has been identified as essential by the communities we work with.
To ensure your generous gifts go to where they're needed most, there is some flexibility built in. Your contribution will go towards funding projects that include items in your gift packages and to other needs in community projects.
For example, if you donate an
Oxfam Unwrapped gift package that includes chickens, you will help fund a project that includes chickens and will contribute to the cost of:
- Buying local chickens
- Training families in how to care for their chickens and other farming methods
- Providing vaccinations for the chickens
- Providing market awareness training so families can make the most of their chickens
- Other essential parts of our rural livelihoods work, like farming tools and training – helping impoverished farmers take that first essential step out of poverty.
This allows us to direct supporters' donations to where the need is greatest. And it ensures that we won't be in a situation where we have too many goats (and not enough food to feed them). It also means we spend less money on the administrative and logistical challenges of tracking individual donations down to specific items in one of the dozens of communities around the world in which we work. We believe this is the most responsible and ethical way in which to work, and has the biggest impact on poverty.
Below are links to some examples of how we spend your money:
Water and sanitation: Water for Survival in Bougainville
Health and well-being: Overcoming Malnutrition in East Timor
Earning a living: Increasing returns for farmers in East Timor

11) Can I find out more about the people/projects my Oxfam Unwrapped gifts have funded?
Please visit our website www.oxfam.org.nz to see where your gifts have been used and what impact they have had on countless people's lives around the world. You can also sign up to receive our e-updates about our work and all the ways you can play a part in the fight against poverty. Unfortunately, we are unable to tell you exactly where the particular gift that you have bought will have gone, as this would be too costly, and mean that less money would be available to use where it is needed most.
12) How much of my money gets to where it is needed?
Oxfam Unwrapped Corporate Gifts is a very cost-effective way of raising funds for Oxfam's work around the world. Our aim is to make the best use of our supporters' money by making the biggest possible difference to the lives of people living in poverty around the world. Overall, for every $1 given to Oxfam, 74c is spent directly on our emergency, development and campaigns work, 3c on communications, 19c is invested to raise more money and 4c is used for essential administration.
13) Are donations to Oxfam tax-deductible?
Yes, donations over $5 are eligible for a tax credit in New Zealand. Once you've purchased your gift packages, you'll receive a tax receipt by post.

14) Why does Oxfam support the use of animals through Oxfam Unwrapped?
The aim of distributing livestock through the projects of Oxfam New Zealand is about increasing the agricultural productivity and helping people to support themselves and earn an income.
Oxfam New Zealand’s agriculture projects focus on the rural poor. In these communities, livestock can equal transport, power, fertiliser and food. Apart from farming activities like ploughing, seeding, fertilising and weeding, livestock are useful for a range of off-farm operations such as carting, cutting and collecting water. Some animals also provide additional food sources - like eggs from chickens and milk from goats and buffalos.
These projects give communities the opportunity to develop new skills such as learning how to get a fair deal when selling produce, knowing what their rights are and working together to get the best possible results.
15) But isn’t it unethical to use animals?
Oxfam understands that there are ethical considerations when supplying animals as part of a development project and that these need to be balanced against the needs of the people we work with. The way we work ensures that the animals used in our projects are not merely distributed to communities with no further engagement. Instead, we form long-term partnerships with communities and often support agricultural projects over a number of years.
What this means in practice, is that our staff regularly monitor and evaluate projects and that training in animal husbandry as well as vaccinations against disease are provided as part of the project.
Animal gifting is not a form of ‘intensive farming’. Most domesticated animals in developing countries are not ‘farmed’ as they are in the developed world. They are ‘kept’ or ‘raised’, usually by families or small communities, with herds rarely getting as large as to be termed ‘intensive farming’.
