Solar energy $58.00

This gift is a light in the dark for a family living in poverty. Solar lanterns enable people to work at night and children to study. Solar panels provide affordable energy to power facilities, like irrigation pumps. And having well-lit clinics and solar-powered fridges in which to store medicines, improves local health care. This super-powered gift is both life changing and life saving.

How does this gift help?:

"Before, there was no way anyone in the village could make any money. The onion project, it has changed this. Oxfam has boosted our lives. We look forward to good things in the community. So we are happy… we have a hope in the future. Our children will be okay. Thanks to your help, I have a future. So thank you very much," said Herman.

In Perouglo, Papua New Guinea, communities are discovering a brighter future by growing onions, thanks to solar energy.

Oxfam has been helping farmers grow and market bulb onions with great success. In addition to providing agricultural training and marketing support, we have helped construct a hybrid solar drier to help farmers dry the crops ready for market. Solar driers are cheap to run and mean less waste, faster processing times and a longer shelf life for the precious crop.
